More than any other question, our clients always ask what they should wear to their session. Coordinating your family outfits can be a daunting task, but it doesn’t have to be! If visuals are helpful for you, we put together some examples every season on our Pinterest page The Barn in Northville. Here are a few things to keep in mind as you put together your outfits!

  1. Don’t be afraid of your own wardrobe!
Many people feel obligated to buy new outfits for their session. While we love having an excuse to go shopping, new clothes are not always the best option. In ten years, it will be much more meaningful to you if your family is wearing some of their favorite pieces than if they are dressed in brand new clothes they’ll never wear again.

  2. Pinterest is for Inspiration
We all love Pinterest, but it can also cause stress as we try to imitate every little detail. Let it inspire your creativity, but don’t feel obligated to copy the examples exactly!

  3. Wear textures
Texture creates visual interest so don’t be afraid to add some to your outfits! A few examples would be corduroy, lace, faux fur, ruffles.

  4. Color-coordinate
Choose two main shades that you love, then add a neutral, using your brightest color, sparingly as an accent.

Lastly, give yourself (and your family!) the freedom to be you. You are the highlight of these images; your clothing should simply be a reflection of you!
